Milk Jug Masks Tutorial
1. Clean out a 1 gallon milk jug
2. Determine the shape of your mask and outline it with the sharpie.
3. Outline your eyes, mouth, nose, etc as well
4. Then with either an exacto knife or a pair so scissors pierce
the milk jug and cut along your outlined mask.
5. Then go ahead and cut out the eyes, mouth, and nose while you are at it.
6. With masking tape cover your whole mask in any way you would like.
Just make sure it is all covered!!
7. Once you have your mask fully covered with masking tape make sure
you have everything covered and securely on your mask, and most
importantly that you are pleased with how it looks!
8. Then determine where you want your mask to have hair and then use a
hole puncher to pierce the holes in your gallon.
9. Then after you punch your holes, use shoe polish to cover your mask.
It is best to use a good quality to avoid fading. I used and brown and black shoe polish
to get a rustic and unique look. I applied the shoe polish by dipping a paper towel
into the shoe polish and then rubbing it onto the mask.
10. Let your mask sit for ten minutes after you apply the shoe polish to allow it to dry.
While waiting for the mask to dry, pick out the colors of paint you would like to design your mask with. I suggest using acrylic paint instead of tempura, because tempura will flake off.
11. Once dry continue to paint your design. You can get ideas from
looking at other african or island masks. Or you can make it up on your own.
12. Allow the paint to dry once you are finished with your design.
13. Once your paint is dry, you can start adding your hair to your mask.
I am using straw for the hair. Add your hair by looping it through the punched hole.
14. Then pull the remaining straw through the loop you created
and repeat until the wholes are filled.
15. Then you have your finished product. Another option to the hair is
that you can add beads by tying or braiding them on. However, once the hair
is put on, you are finished with your milk jug mask!!!

Milk Jug Masks
The purpose of this assignment was to create a mask by using a milk jug. The instructor brought in pictures of masks to help give some ideas, and then demonstrated how to do the milk jug.
This assignment was really fun to do and work on and is great for any age! While working on my milk jug I used two different types of shoe polish to get a unique color. I used a brown and black mixed together and applied it by using a paper towel. Then when it came to paint my mask I chose red, yellow, and white. I used the milk jugs handle for my nose because most of the masks that we observed in class had exaggerated features such as their noses and face shapes. Great project to work on!

Batik
This assignment we were instructed to look at other batiks and prints done on clothing, then we were instructed to create our own design on a poster. We then traced the design onto a piece of fabric with a paste made with flour, water, and another substance I cannot remember. Then we let the paste dry over night and then painted it the next day with acrylic paint.
For this assignment I created my design by remembering the movie "Tangled". I loved the pattern of the yellow sun with the purple back ground and also how it represented a flower. So when creating my piece I kept that in mind and used flower like symbols and then suns in the middle. Then I used the colors in "Tangled" red, yellow, orange, and purple. I was really happy with how it was turning out. After I applied the paint then I let it dry, after the paint was dry I pealed off the paste and then washed the fabric to remove access paint and let the stain sink in.

Coil/Pinch Pots
This assignment we were instructed to create a pinch pot with even walls and thickness. We were instructed that we can make the pinch pot into anything and add textures to our pot.
When creating my pinch pot I liked the idea of a leaf because of my love for nature. Plus all the other times I have made a pinch pot, I have never ventured out from a regular pot. On the outside of my leaf I decided to carve tree branches with leaves into the side. Once the pots were dry we were able to paint our pots either using acrylic, tempura, or watercolors. I decided to use the acrylic paints and when using the paint on the outside, I found that where I carved the trees and leaves it outlined it, giving it a cool rustic look to me. I liked the inconsistency of the color making it a cool effect.

Chinese Brush Painting
This assignment was super interesting! Our instructor had ordered chinese ink kits where we had to grind our own ink. Our instructor demonstrated three different strokes to use and then put them together to make it into bamboo. We were to practice these strokes and then create our own bamboo using the strokes that we have learned.
When creating my bamboo I found that I would constantly have to be making more ink because it would run out so fast. The stroke I had the hardest time with was creating the leaves for the bamboo. I also had a hard time with holding the brush straight up and down instead of sideways like I am used to. However, all in all it was a fun project to work on. I liked seeing the three strokes come together to make bamboo. Word of caution when working with rice paper, it absorbs water really easily so test the ink out before placing it onto the rice paper!

Wire Sculptures
This assignment we were asked to create a sculpture with wire that would belong in a circus.
I personally had a very hard time working with wire. I got several cuts and could not get the shape I wanted for the life of me! That resulted in me creating a barrel for my wire sculpture. Yes, there are barrels in the circus and with all of the elephants that my peers created they needed a barrel to play with! Not my favorite, but I did enjoy seeing our circus come together!

Passacaliga
For this assignment we were given a grid and a clear sheet to put over it, then we were put into groups of three. Then each individual of the group was given different set of numbers to plot on clear sheet over the grid. Once we had our numbers plotted, we then combined the three plotted sheets over one another. Our instructions from there was to create something using these dots and work together as a group when determining the end result.
In my group we decided to flip the points that we were initially given and then once we did that we would each individually work on our own plotting other points and using other colors. Then occasionally we would combine our pieces together to see where an area needs work on or where to add more color! Once we were done with adding lines, we started color blocking and mixing colors together. Then we mounted our artwork once we were finished.
Georgia O'Keefe Flowers
This assignment our instructor brought in all different types of flowers. She gave us a back ground of Georgia O'Keefe and how she is famous for her portraits of flowers painted in water color. To complete this assignment we were to cut out a small one by one square on a piece of paper to help our focus when looking at the flower. Then we were to draw the flower pretty large on a watercolor canvas and then paint the flower in watercolors.
For this assignment I really enjoyed working with watercolors. In order to get the color I needed for creating my flower I needed to mix the water colors together to create a new color. I mixed reds and purples to put for the shading of my flower and to add some depth. I was really pleased with how it turned out!

Color
The purpose of this assignment was to listen to music the teacher plays and then paint what you felt as the music was playing.
As I was doing this assignment the music that was played was very interesting, because it was not your typical music. The first picture you see we were asked while listening to the music to pick a shape and use it small, medium, and big. We were asked to use complementary colors while using the shapes and then at the end we were able to add another color that we thought would be a good contrast to the piece without overwhelming the original two complementary colors.
The second piece we were asked to only use black and white colors while listening to the music. The music was again interesting and not the original kind of music you would choose to listen to on a daily basis. This music had specific beats that would stand out which is indicated by quick dots and splashes of paint on the paper. Then there were moments where the music seemed to flow and combine the beats which gives the grey lines shown above.

Internal Texture- Water color Techniques
The foods I used to complete this assignment were:
1. Sweedish Fish (top left)
2. Chocolate No Bake Cookies (upper middle)
3. Cheetos (top right)
4. Tootsie Rolls (bottom left)
5. Chips and Salsa (lower middle)
6. Lays Potato Chips (bottom right)
I really enjoyed doing this assignment, mainly because it was associated with food, but it was very fun to see the different techniques you can use with water colors, and being creative with painting what you taste non-objectively.

Rhythm Sculpture
The purpose of this assignment was to demonstrate our knowledge of making patterns and creating rhythm by using color and shape.
For this assignment I used warm colors (red, yellow, orange) to use in my pattern. I started using the red circle blocks to get a base of the pattern, then I started adding upon the pattern using yellow styrofoam to add contrast between the layers of the red circle blocks. Then to make my sculpture stick out I filled the holes of the red circle blocks with sticks to add more to the piece. Once our sculpture was laid out the way we wanted it, we glued it on to the black styrofoam board and then mounted it on to a thick white card stock and then signed our name to the sculpture. This was a fun project because it allowed my mind to think creatively on how I wanted to portray my sculpture and it was fun to see it all come together in the end.

Weaving
This assignment we were instructed to create a weave using a loom created from a styrofoam plate measured on each side approximately a half inch in between each measurement. Then we were to cut the marks we measured and then thread the yarn through the slits we created. Then we were instructed to to create this weave by using fabric, straw, paper, and anything else that we could weave into our piece of work. How we went about weaving was to do the opposite of the last weave. So if we were to go over the first yarn then we were to go under the yarn one we were to start a new row.
For this assignment I created this weave by braiding certain fabrics together to get that twisted look between the red and teal green colors. I tried to also include warm and cool colors into this piece because I felt that it gave the weave a nice contrast. I also included straw and paper into this weave because I feel that it made it more like some of the original weaves. This was a fun assignment that was a nice change from painting and drawing. It was fun to learn a new technique and strategy to create art work.
Australian Aboriginal Art
The purpose of this assignment was to display a story that has been occurring in our lifetime and then come up with our own symbols to portray our story. Once we came up with our symbols we were instructed what Australian Aboriginal art included. We learned that Australian Aboriginal art included using techniques called stippling and cross hatching when completing their work.
For this assignment my story included me and my future husband going off and starting our own families and how the story of our lives will go (ideally). This project I used the stippling technique for the majority of the piece. This took a lot of time, and was very time consuming, but happened to be one of my favorites from the semester. I was really pleased with how it turned out.

Alien Names
This project we were required to fold a piece of paper and then along the crease write our names in cursive and then outline it again and cut it. Then we were to create an alien from our cut out name. Once we created our alien then we were to create a habitat for our alien. The purpose of this project is to display beauty in our alien culture. This was a fun way to let our minds be creative.
While creating my alien I focused on more of an indigenous look for the alien. What made this alien beautiful is how many eyes she has! The more eyes the marrier! My alien's population lives in active volcanoes and love roaming the beautiful land.

Gesture and Contour Line
The picture above is a Contour line drawing. The purpose of contour line drawing to to look at the object you are drawing and with your pencil have a continuous steady flow of the shape and then once your initial shape is determined you start adding darker line on the shape that you determined. Most of us are so used to drawing piece by piece, however with contour line drawings the purpose is to determine the shape towards the end.
The contour drawing I chose to do is a drawing of my lamp in my bedroom.
In this picture it is a Gesture line drawing. This type of drawing is similar to what most of us are familiar with by drawing it very precise. It is a cleaner version compared to gesture drawings,
The gesture drawing I did was of my flip flop I wore to class that day.
Non-Objective Squares
When working on this project my line started from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. From there I created triangles from the middle of the line that went corner to corner. The board initially had a gold tint to it, so I decided to utilize the gold when using it in my piece. To compliment the gold I used a silver and black sharpie, and then added in a rustic red oil pastel in some of the gold areas to make the black and silver stand out. I enjoyed creating and designing the lay out of this project and see it all come together.

Mandala
This project we were instructed to create a mandala. The mandala needed to be symmetric and we were to create the mandala as a representation of who we are.
In my mandala there is a ton of nature/wildlife, this is because I love the worlds natural beauty and love being outdoors. In the middle of my mandala there are two of my favorite places to be, that is the mountains and the beach. These are places that make me feel peace inside, which is why they are in my middle of my piece. Then moving outward it branches off into trees. One of the trees is my family tree and the other is for my future husbands family tree. They are connected in the middle because one day our families will come together. The birds represents my immediate family. I am the oldest of 3 siblings. Creating my mandala I was able to express myself and share with people what I really care about.
